Sketching with coco is an explorative album, a conversation between the composer and the instrument through which both come closer to one another. The cocoquantus was a new instrument acquired during the pandemic, a special connection between the artist and the instrument was there from the first minute. The cocoquantus is a magical instrument that keeps surprising and challenges it’s player in a very intuitive way. The album was recorded during the pandemic years, all songs are live recordings and unedited. The recordings were originally not intended to be released, merely to be archived. Because of this during the recording of these tracks there was a sense of freedom to experiment and explore the instrument, its loops and controlled chaos. When listening through these recordings there seemed to be something interesting developing which lead to the decision to release a selection on this album.

The album was released on the brithday of my youngest son. Apart from a digital release the album also came out on cassete which I felt really suited the sound of the album. An inital series of 50 have been produced, together with a little bit of merchandising containing stcikers and t-shrts.

When you enter the building you enter the biscuit, a site specific sound installation that was created in the former biscuit factory that now houses Espacio Open during The Echoing River project. The sound installation immerses the audience inside a biscuit that was once produced inside this particular building.

Dr John Fass was the main lab lead. Alaistair Steele, Dr Tyler Fox and myself were the other 3 lab facilitators. During this project we all did some interventions ourselves as well. As for me I helped out on the “Hydrophonic Fishing” with Dr John Fass.

These hydrophone fishing recordings formed the base for the sound design I did for the Tent project which was realised with Dr John Fass and Dr Tyler Fox. The idea is that you draw on the walls of the tent and take inspiration from the sound by doing so.

The Echoing River is a DRS2022 Bilbao Lab project that expresses the relationship between Zorrotzaurre and the river that surrounds it. Working at Espacio Open, 14 students from London and Bilbao have collaborated to materialise this relationship. They present a series of spatial and acoustic experiences that position sonic placemaking as a way to enable shared imagining. Post industrial urban environments offer irresistible opportunities for gentrification. Our aim is to build a shared culture of radical openness in an area of the city currently threatened by property speculation. The process of generating experimental ideas, sharing material explorations, and collaborating across disciplines offers an alternative to orthodox consultation. With this lab we sought to value what is already there here and to show that the fragile and [recasious working and living conditions on Zorrotzaurre represent a social and material ecosystem that should be nourished and supported.

Dr John Fass invited me and Anoushka Cole to the MA User Experience program at LCC to run and workshop focussing on Bio materials and Sound. The studentst created all kinds of bio materials based a recipes provided by Anoushka. The students were tasked to create audio instruments with these materials, they got an introduced into the magic world of contact mics which they could implement and use to create otherworldly sounds.

I ran a Soundlab for Graphic and Media Design at the London College of Communication, University of the Arts London. During 4 sessions students experimented with sound in non musical ways discovering the hidden world of sounds around us. They did this with contact microphones that allowed them to listen to sound within materials. We started with a walk discovering what different materials sound like, after this the focus was on collecting materials and building sound instruments that could then be used to play and create sounds. During the sessions students soldered their own contact mics and dipped these in fluid plastic to create lofi hydrophones. By the end each student created a short composition using the sounds they discovered and created with their contact mics.

This video was created as a teaser and invitation for the White Noise Elective I ran in 2022 at the Royal College or Art, London. The elective intented students to experiment and encoured them to step out of their comfortzones. This video was made such way to keep things vague and experimental and exiting in order to get the most adventurous students to choose this elective.

This album was recorded in February 2020 at a cottage in a small village called Polany located in the Polish Low Beskids mountain range. This location had a strong impact on the music that I composed during that time. Yet the biggest influence on this all was the sudden life threatening illness and of my mother in law during this period. Yet it was her that convinced me to still go and record this music. The album titles reflect the days on which things were recorded as well as the numbered patches made on the modular synth which was used to compose on. When I arrived in Polany the first couple of days the recordings were pretty heavy and toward the end of my stay these became more calm. I've rearranged the days in a way so that the experience of listening the album as a whole becomes more consistent travel through emotions reflected in these recordings. All recordings are live improvisations on modular synth and have not been edited afterwards. The album releases with a music video for song no.6 on the album. This animation reflects a farewell moving away into an unknown undiscovered other reality.

This album is dedicated to Jolanta Rawecka, my mother in law, who passed away on the 22nd of February in 2020 not long after this album was recorded. The release date is the 24th of May 2021 which is the birthday of my oldest son. Big thanks to my friends and family and anyone who has supported me with this. Special thanks to Piotrek, Janek and Piotrek who were with me on this trip to Polany. Big thanks to my wife who always supports me in doing these projects. Last but not least a lot of thanks to Guiseppe for doing the master. creditsreleased May 24, 2021 Master by Guiseppe Lelasi

For this 4 day long workshop I was invited by professor Henk (Christian Henkel) at the HDBK in Dresden. The workshop started out by covering some basic electronics, synthesis and interaction. After this all participants were set off home to come up with ideas for their own unique instruments. The following day each student presented their ideas after which we made up plans to build these instruments. After 3 days of very hard work the 4th and final day the instruments were publicly presented in the Art College's garden.

Synthclub was a weekly club I ran at the Royal College of Art, the main focus was exploring synth DIY in a laidback environment. Students could go at individual paces with focus on their own interests related to their projects. Synthclub was inspired by the “Hobbyclubs” I remember from my youth growing up in the Netherlands. Hobbyclubs were places where you could drop by without any commitment and whenever you wanted, just to build cool things. My idea was to introduce this same spirit into the Royal College of Art, but with a focus on sound and synth DIY. Students didn’t have to reserve nor did they have to drop by every week, it was totally up to them to decide their commitment.

There were several students who took things beyond my immagination. One of them was Carolin Schnurrer who really got into the controlling sound through the resistance of the body and touch. Her final year project proofs that we need to keep making and experimenting to get further and discover the unexpted in our creative processes. Here below the documentation of Carolin’s final year project. Please read more about this fascinating project here.

Another student that took things onto a whole new level was Yiming Yang who started fitting synth circuits into Barby dolls. Technically very impressive how she managed to keep pushing with this and even went to share this project together with Dimitris Menexopoulos at the Apple Regent store presenting their “Nonsense Sounds”.

During the workshop you will be introduced to basic electronic parts and their functions. We learnhow to read a schematic, and to transfer this to a breadboard. After some first experiments we will build a simple sound generator. The next step will be to add asequencer that will control the pitch of the oscillator. Everyone can design the way their instrumentworks in a unique way. When everyone is satisfied and all projects are working, we can move on tofinalise our projects.First thing to do is to draw a schematic of the unique instrument you’ve created. The last step will beto transfer this to a soldered working prototype created with only the used parts and copper wire. Thi can be done in a purely functional way, or in a more artistic way. The circuit itself becomes a sculp-ture, and the goal is to create an aesthetic and working electronic sculpture.

During the workshop you will be introduced to basic electronic parts and their functions. We learn how to read a schematic, and to transfer this to a breadboard.

This time we will be expanding our design with an analog sequencer. At its most basic, an analog sequencer consists of a bank of potentiometers and a "clock" (pulse generator) connected to a sequencer, which steps through these potentiometers one at a time and then cycles back to the beginning. The output of the sequencer is fed (as a control voltage and gate pulse) to a synthesizer. By "tuning" the potentiometers, a short repetitive rhythmic motif or riff can be set up
