Guest Lecture — Hubei Institute of Fine Arts (HIFA), Wuhan China

The Digital Era: Multisensory Experiences

Invited by the School of Visual Arts and Design at the Hubei Institute of Fine Arts (HIFA) as part of the university's Foreign Experts & International Talent Lecture Series, I delivered a guest lecture titled The Digital Era: Multisensory Experiences.

The lecture focused on two strands of my practice: my interdisciplinary work across sound, moving image, illustration, animation, and installation, and White Noise, the elective I designed and teach within the Information Experience Design (IED) Master's programme at the Royal College of Art. I began by discussing the relationship between sound and nature, explaining that sound, as one of humanity's most important senses, profoundly influences our experience of the world and therefore occupies a central place in my creative practice. I then presented sound recordings collected from natural environments alongside artworks developed from these recordings, using them to introduce the principles of experience design before sharing projects from nearly two decades of practice.

Following the lecture, I took part in an informal academic discussion with professors and students on design education in the UK and China. The conversation explored the educational philosophies and structures of the Royal College of Art's Information Experience Design programme alongside the opportunities and challenges currently facing design education in China, with discussions on future collaboration and the development of locally contextualised experience design workshops.
