The secrets of a versatile artist's distracted focus
This talk explored the wide variety within my practice and how these different directions exist alongside each other. It brought together projects in sound, animation, speculative design, drawing, education, and White Noise. I wanted the presentation to exist somewhere between a talk and an audiovisual performance. It was an experiment and the first time I had worked in this format. I like putting myself in challenging situations, and this felt like a way to move beyond a conventional lecture.
Throughout the presentation, the talk seamlessly transitioned into live music and sound. Using real-time sampling of my own voice together with other sounds, I created ambient and rhythmic soundscapes while the visuals continued to unfold on screen. Rather than separating the spoken and performed parts, the presentation became one continuous audiovisual piece. While the overall structure was planned, some sections were left completely improvised.

I was invited to give a talk as part of the Creative Talks series, a multidisciplinary programme exploring creativity and practice-based research through presentations by artists, designers, makers, writers, and other creative practitioners. The event was hosted at i-DAT, the University of Plymouth's Open Research Lab for playful experimentation in creative technology, digital arts, and creative media.
